Under Indian law, possession of obscene material for private use is not a punishable offence. Section 292 IPC punishes sale, distribution, or public exhibition of obscene material, but private possession is not criminal unless it involves child pornography (banned under POCSO & IT Act). Mere purchase or reading of an obscene book for personal use does not attract penal consequences.

Mere possession or private reading of an obscene book is generally not punishable under Indian law. Legal action is usually taken only when such material is sold, publicly distributed, or displayed. Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) applies to the sale, distribution, or public exhibition of obscene content, not to private use. So, if a person purchases an obscene book for private use and does not share or display it publicly, legal action is unlikely.
