Question about recording voice in a conversation

17-Jul-2025 (In Civil Law)
So , I didn't knew we are not allowed to do business kinda things in hostel , and when a pt teacher living in hostel got to know about that , sent a junior to me to tell I am fined of 1k for doing it. Later that night when I asked my father about it, actually I don't know the telugu language so properly that I can convey the things properly to them so I recorded our conversation. It happened in between 4 members, is that a crime ?

Recording a conversation for clarity or proof without malicious intent is generally not a criminal offence, especially if you are part of the conversation. However, misuse or unauthorized sharing could lead to issues. As long as it was recorded for personal understanding and not circulated, it's unlikely to be treated as a crime. For further clarity on hostel rules or legal options, you may consult directly.

Secretly recording a conversation can raise privacy concerns under the Indian Information Technology Act . Especially if done without consent. However if the conversation happened in a group of four people and you were part of it. It generally is not a criminal offence because you recorded your own conversation. But demanding or paying money to avoid punishment could amount to extortion. It is best to speak to a lawyer, explain all facts clearly, and avoid such recordings or payments in future .

No, recording your own conversation with your father for clarity is not a crime, even if it happened in the presence of others. Indian law does not prohibit recording your own conversations, as long as you are a participant. It becomes problematic only if you secretly record private talks between other people without being part of it, which can raise privacy issues. Since you recorded your discussion to explain hostel issues to your father, it does not amount to any offence.
