Need Correction in my educational certificates and Pan card, Aadhaar

17-Sep-2025 (In Civil Law)
I am from Delhi, India, and I was born in 1991. However, when I was in the 10th standard, my date of birth and my father's surname were recorded incorrectly. Since then, I have been using these incorrect details. Is it possible for me to get them corrected?

Hi there, you should collect all the relevant documents and approach the concerned authorities to get it corrected. However, keep in mind that their actions depends on the documents available which shows correct record and the reason for delay in correction. If they don't respond then unfortunately you'll have to file an application in the district court for correction. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Yes, you can get these details corrected. For the date of birth, you will need to apply for rectification with the CBSE/concerned education board by submitting supporting documents like your birth certificate, school records, and an affidavit. For correcting your father’s surname, you will need documentary proof such as his Aadhaar, PAN, or any official ID, along with an affidavit. If the school board does not allow correction due to time lapse, you can approach the civil court seeking a declaration and direction for rectification. Courts generally permit such corrections when supported with valid documents.

Yes it is. First, prepare an affidavit stating your correct date of birth (as per your birth certificate) and your father’s correct surname. Next, publish this correction in two newspapers – one in English and one in the local language – so that it is made public. After that, apply for the correction to be published in the Official Gazette. Once it appears in the Gazette, the correction is legally valid and can be used to update all your documents.

You can get your incorrect date of birth and father’s surname corrected. You will have to submit valid proof documents like your birth certificate, Aadhaar card, PAN card or school leaving certificate. You must give a written application to your school board (such as Central Board of Secondary Education or whichever board issued your Class 10 certificate) explaining the mistake and attaching the correct documents. The board will verify your documents and approve the correction. Sometimes they may also ask for an affidavit, a newspaper notice and a gazette notification. After approval, they will issue a corrected certificate.
