Changing names on old school records is difficult as boards usually allow only clerical corrections. However, since you have a Gazette Notification that acts as legal proof of your identity. Instead of forcing a reissue, you can carry your Gazette Copy and Aadhar alongside your original marksheet for all future purposes. If a reissue is mandatory, you may need to file a Writ Petition in High Court to compel the board to update their records based on the legal name change.

Yes, you can seek change of your name in educational documents such as marksheets and Leaving Certificate even after passing, especially when you already have a valid Gazette notification, because such a request is treated as a legal change of identity and not a routine correction; although schools and boards often rely on internal rules to say that changes are not permitted after passing, those rules cannot override constitutional and legal principles recognising a person’s right to identity, and courts have consistently held that educational authorities cannot refuse such requests outright when supported by a Gazette notification, affidavit, and updated identity documents. Practically, you should first submit a formal written application to the school and the concerned board enclosing the Gazette notification, name-change affidavit, Aadhaar/PAN reflecting the new name, and request either correction or endorsement of the changed name in records; if the application is rejected, obtain a written, reasoned refusal. Thereafter, you may pursue legal remedies by filing a writ petition under Article 226 of the Constitution before the jurisdictional High Court or a civil suit seeking declaration and mandatory injunction, where courts commonly direct the board to correct the name or issue fresh certificates with an endorsement such as “formerly known as,” thereby giving legal effect to the Gazette notification despite the objection that the student has already passed.

Even after Gazette notification, boards may refuse post-result changes as per rules. You can file a representation with Gazette copy. If rejected, approach High Court by writ seeking direction to update records as per the concerned provisions of law.
