Closure of NRO-NRE Accounts by PoA or similar without visiting.

26-May-2026 (In Recovery Law)
Hello! We are NRI (non-returning Indians) with no intentions of returning. Nor any need to visit (no family/ relations in India). We have at least two accounts (NRE/ NRO) that we used to pay for our [late] parents medical bills and so on. Is there a way to get the accounts closed through e.g. acquaintances through power of attorney or a law firm without us having to visit?

Yes, you can absolutely close your NRE and NRO bank accounts remotely without physically visiting India. Indian banks allow NRIs to manage and close their accounts through various remote channels, provided the proper documentation is submitted. You can get it done through both the ways you have listed yourself. And there is another additional way.

Yes...you can always execute a SPA (special power of attorney) which will be notarized here in India and in that way your account can be closed without your physical presence in India. For more legal assistance I am just a call away.

You may execute a Special Power of Attorney in favour of a trusted person in India specifically authorising operation and closure of the accounts. The POA usually needs notarisation and apostille/Indian Consulate attestation depending upon the country of execution. Some banks also allow complete closure through courier/email-based processes subject to video KYC or signature verification. Before proceeding, check with the respective bank branches regarding their exact documentation and whether physical presence is required in exceptional cases. Any pending dues, locker facilities, or linked investments should also be closed first.

Yes, this is possible without visiting. Grant a registered Power of Attorney (PoA) to a trusted friend or a law firm in India. The document must be specific and explicitly authorize account closure. Check bank for required forms.
