Gas Connection switched off by management

17-Jun-2026 (In Property Law)
My gas connection was manually switched off by the building management using the utility service provider's dashboard. There is ample balance in my account and this looks like an act of mischief given that there is an ongoing dispute with the management. What are my legal options?

You can post the following LawRato response: If the gas connection was disconnected despite sufficient balance and without any valid reason, and if the building management intentionally used the utility provider's dashboard to disconnect your service, it may amount to unlawful interference with your right to enjoy the premises and deficiency in service. First, preserve all evidence, including screenshots of your account balance, disconnection status, communications with the management, and any confirmation from the utility provider regarding who initiated the disconnection. Immediately submit a written complaint to the utility service provider seeking restoration of the connection and details of the disconnection request. If the act was done maliciously due to an ongoing dispute, you may issue a legal notice to the management and seek appropriate civil remedies, including injunction and compensation for losses suffered. Depending on the facts and evidence available, a police complaint may also be considered if there is deliberate misuse of authority causing wrongful loss or harassment. Consult a local advocate with all documents for case-specific advice.

If the disconnection was carried out despite sufficient balance and without any lawful authority, prior notice, or contractual justification, such action may amount to arbitrary interference with essential services, deficiency in service, and wrongful deprivation of a lawful utility connection. You should immediately preserve all evidence, including account statements, screenshots, dashboard records, communications, and details of the ongoing dispute. A formal legal notice may be issued to the building management and service provider seeking restoration of service, explanation for the disconnection, and compensation for the inconvenience caused. If the disconnection was motivated by malice or to exert pressure in an unrelated dispute, you may have grounds to initiate appropriate proceedings before the Consumer Commission and seek restoration of service, damages, compensation, and other consequential reliefs. No management body can ordinarily disconnect essential services as a coercive measure without due process of law.
