Is the police allowed to physically assault an offender

During the police check up for document verification of the vehicle (bike) my brother have submitted all the required documents after clear verification he just kick started the bike where other constable trying to stop for helmet, where he moved the bike and later on police people caught him and took him the station and hit hard on the back and knees. is it such a crime that the police people need to hit him?

No the police cannot physically assault a person . If they did so then you can file a complaint in the police station else you can file it before any senior officer .you can also file a complaint in the court under section 200 of Indian penal code. howevevr you can also file a complaint in the human rights commission
