Hit and run case against cousin what would happen if he gets caught

my cousin was driving alone and mistakenly hit a beggar as a lorry came from side and was taking care of that. This beggar tried to cross the road the same time and this happened. He did not stop as he was alone. What can be done if the police catches him? He has been driving for 15 yrs and never had any issues/complaints
has any complaint been filed against him if not then need not to worry and if yes then charges under section 304A would be pressed against him. he needs to surrender and try to compromise the matter before it reaches the court or FIR is being lodged. if you provide better details can help in broader way
