Generally bail means that you are free to roam anywhere in the society in any criminal case. 

There are two form of bail first is regular bail and second is anticipatory bail. Regular bail may be applied under section 437 and 439 cr.p.c while anticipatory bail is applied under section 438 of criminal procedure code. 

Anticipatory bail is applied in those condition where there is a apprehension of arrest by the police while regular bail is applied in those circumstances where any person is already arrested by the police. There are certain guidelines by the supreme court in his various judgment for procedure in the event of arrest and that procedure has to be followed by the police at the time of arrest of ant male/female. Even supreme court has given certain guidelines for disposal of bail application in regular bail as well as anticipatory bail but a discretion of judicial power always lies with the judicial officer in case of hearing of bail application.
