The caste of children always decided by their father's caste, but in special cases if the children can proof that they are broughtup with destitute mother in her social environment they can claim the caste status of their mother.

Generally the child belongs to the Father's caste. In some situations the child can claim the mother's caste. Hon'ble Supreme Court of India ruled in Ramesh bhai Dabhai Naima vrs State of Gujarat and others in Civil Appeal no. 654/2012, Dtd. 18.01.2012
