Wearing Mangalsutra Is Mandatory In Hindu Law?
06-May-2023 (In Family Law)
I have been married for 1.7 years under Hindu tradition. My husband is very particular about me wearing my mangalsutra while most of his and my cousins dont wear it everyday. He also restricts me with wearing western dresses like jeans and tshirts. This is being very suffocating as i like to be modern and he likes me to be totally traditional. Is there any law that says wearing mangalsutra is mandatory or is there any legal issue arising while i remove mangalsutra against his wish? I told i will wear black beads but he does not like it. Can it be forced on me to wear it daily? I dont like to be restricted while many others are not wearing it. Please suggest if something can be done. I have also told i will wear it while someone is at home or if i go outside.
Dear Madam,
Wearing or nonwearing of Mangal Sutra is not a condition precident to continue the marriage relationship. Your husband deserves marriage counselling. You may adjust with such small demand of your husband but you are not suppose to tortured by your husband on other activities of yourself. You may get issue a strong legal notice and put rest to his such demand.
