Steps involved in 'person missing' case

What are the actions that will be taken on missing case. If the person is major and got separated from family by own wish then how the case is taken forward.
If any person of majority choose to leave his/her family it does not make a 'missing case'. But there is a tendency among the parents to file a HCP before High court pleading false facts which only resulting to the embarrassment when their ward reiterate his/her stand before judges.
