Spelling correction in marriage certificate
11-Feb-2026 (In Family Law)
I had traditional marriage and later I applied for marriage certificate.
The certificate was issued on spot but in my wife's maiden name they have done a spelling mistake and one letter is missing.
When we reached out to them and asked about same they said they cannot reissue the certificate. How true is it? Is there any process by which I can get my marriage certificate corrected?
If its possible, how much time does it take to correct it and which documents are needed?
A spelling mistake in the marriage certificate can be corrected; the authority cannot refuse correction if proper proof is submitted. You should file a written application for “correction of entry” before the same Marriage Registrar who issued the certificate. Attach copy of the marriage certificate, identity proofs of both spouses (Aadhaar/passport), and documents showing the correct spelling such as school certificate, PAN card, or birth certificate. After verification, the Registrar can make correction in the register and issue a revised certified copy. The process generally takes about 2–4 weeks depending upon local office procedure and verification requirements.
