my wife's name (not surname) as my son's surname?

I am NRI and my son will be born overseas. I will get the birth certificate on the day of birth. e.g. My name is : Shankar Mahadev (given names), Pinde (surname) My wifes name is : Parvati Uma (given names), Devi (surname) I want to chose my son's name as : Ganesh (given names), Parvati (surname) As a foreigner, I can choose a surname for my child. South indians usually chose father's name as the surname (e.g. in passport column surname). Can I choose mother's name (not surname)

I have gone through your Query. You have not asked the question specifically. For the passport you will have to provide all the details as required by the passport authority. The passport Authority will print according their prescription. Yes you can choose mother name. And make affidavit for it.
