Harassment by mother in law and no cooperation by family

14-Apr-2023 (In Family Law)
My Mom in Law has had very bitter post marriage experiences from her in laws and her husband (My father-in-law).She has an elder daughter and two sons all married. The problem starts here I am her younger daughter in law and stay in a nuclear family at some other town other than her's. Whenever I visit her place she seems to be full of negativity and always tries to impose her feelings and advice on me suggesting me ways to eat sit dine bla bla bla...she is the most dominating woman on earth. Her children think (including my hubby)that she has been tortured all these years hence behaves like this. But what I feel is she is taking undue advantage of the sympathy of her kids and misbehaving with her daughter in laws. I go not very often but the elder daughter in law is working and stays with her. Pls.tell both of us how to cope with her.

Hello,
For the query you posted, I would suggest the following:

As you have come for a legal resort, one thing which you can do is to file a domestic violence complaint with the concerned adjudicating authority.

Therein as you will pray before the court for specific reliefs, such will be addressed.

I hope this answers your query.

Hello!!
first of all what do you want as you said your are not regularly visiting there so there is not a big issue for you but yes, your elder sis in law she might be suffering a lot but the thing is she has not taken any step again it, means she is not interested in any way to take any action if she really wants to do then you both have to meet me.

The term legal remedy does not fit here. Although the scope of negotiations and mediations is always there. She must be told about how ruthless behavior she is having regardless of whatever circumstances were there at her time.

Firstly you need to collect some evidence to prove your claims. Even if your allegations are correct there has to be some evidence like a recording, eye witness or torture proof like a medical record.
The legal remedy lies with Domestic Violence Act. You can file a complaint against her under this law.
Normally parents in similar cases try to disown their son and daughter in law but that is a future proposition which can also be legally challenged to claim your legal right in ancestral property.

If your husband and you are having good tuning, then just ignore the acts of your mother-in-law because in your life, its a temporary phase as you have intimated that you do not go quite often to your mother-in-law's house. As far as the condition of your sister-in-law is concerned, if she is happy with her husband, she should follow the same pattern of ignoring her mother-in-law but in case her husband does not support her, then she can file a complaint in the court under section 12 of Domestic Violence Act against the mother-in-law and husband. It would be better if you meet us for proper guidance.
