Can I take OBC certificate if my mother's family belongs to that caste

I am 26 year old, currently I am living in himachal. my mother married to an unknown person , he was from south India, and my mother belongs to himachal from a chaudhary family. father left me and my mother when I was just 13 year old. currently we don't know anything about my paternal family side. I brought up by my maternal family that is in himachal . so my question is that, can I apply for OBC certificate as my mother belongs to OBC community in himachal Pradesh. my financial condition is very poor, I want to get select in a govt exam.
