Your friend can seek divorce on the ground of cruelty. But it is time consuming if the wife is going to contest the matter. A couple of rounds of discussion with family and relatives may yeild to divorce by mutual consent. If the wife does not accept for mutual divorce then your friend will have to file a case and contest the same.
