As per your instructions you have obtained the divorce from the courts of UAE which is a foreign court. There are many criterias to decide about the validity of the foreign judgement. Since you have obtained the decree from foreign court need to get it confirm whether the same was issued by the competent authority having jurisdiction to entertain the marriage petition. Also it depends upon the provision under which you have taken the divorce that is Hindu marriage Act, Muslim marriage, Special marriage Act which one is applicable in your case. Finally you need to approach the family court for declaration of your marriage.

You will have to file a petition before the Court in whose jurisdiction you reside for the same. And get an order from Court. Passport office will readily accept such order of Indian Court and have the name changed.

To get a foreign divorce decree (like from UAE) recognised in India, you need to file an application for its recognition before the appropriate Indian family court under Section 13 of the Civil Procedure Code. The Indian court will verify if the decree was passed on merits and with due notice to both parties. Once validated, you can submit the court’s order to the passport office to update your marital status. It is advisable to engage a lawyer to file the petition and ensure proper representation.

Indian courts generally recognize foreign divorce decrees, particularly those issued by mutual consent, but there are conditions and limitations. A foreign divorce decree is more likely to be accepted if the foreign court had jurisdiction based on domicile or if both parties voluntarily submitted to its authority.  Do not worry, I will help you out in getting the UAE Divorce Decree recognised from the concerned Indian Family Court and then thereafter will assist you in getting the name of your Spouse changed on your Passport.

My ex-wife is a Danish citizen, and I am an Indian citizen. We obtained a mutual-consent divorce in Denmark in 2023. Is recognition of the decree still required in India?
