No documentation of marriage so is divorce necessary?

I think i was married in Istanbul but i never received any documentations and never saw the man again. We were taken to a room and things were said in a different language and then we left. I am American and live in the US and he is in Iran and will never be allowed travel to the US. This was many years ago and i want to marry my fiancé in the US. Do i even need to file for divorce first? I have no paperwork, no contact and it was never recorded in the US. Thank you!

In the first place, US law has to be dealt with by attorneys working in the competent jurisdiction in the US itself. Therefore, it should be consulted with a US attorney and not Indian law practitioners. However, you can marry your fiance in the US under the laws of the country.
