Legally, in India, marriage requires mutual consent and compliance with the applicable personal laws (e.g., Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 for Hindus). Applying sindoor or claiming someone as a wife without a formal marriage registered under law (e.g., under Section 7 or 8) has no legal standing unless a valid ceremony occurred with witnesses and registration. If he or his family are pressuring or misleading you, this could potentially be addressed as emotional manipulation or misrepresentation, though proving it requires evidence like messages or witnesses. The sindoor application might be a cultural gesture or an attempt to confuse, but it doesn’t constitute a marriage without legal formalities.

You can anytime send him a legal notice regarding your grievances and warn him to marry you or face legal action. And if you wish to go legal then you can also file a complaint in writing mentioning all the details and address the same to the police station according to your jurisdiction.
