I am Advocate Sudesh. Regarding your question regarding 'khula', under Indian law (the Muslim Women Act, 1986), if you are unable to support yourself, you are legally entitled to claim alimony/maintenance even after the iddat period has ended. To formally register your divorce, you must obtain a legal decree from the family court. For a detailed strategy tailored to your specific case, I am available for a paid consultation. **Suggested Response:** Under Muslim personal law, *Khula* is a form of divorce initiated by the wife with the consent of the husband. Generally, the husband is liable to provide maintenance only during the **iddah period**. However, if the wife is unable to maintain herself, she may still claim maintenance under **Section 125 CrPC (now Section 144 BNSS)** or other applicable laws, depending on the circumstances. Regarding registration, once Khula is mutually agreed and properly documented (through a Khulanama or declaration before witnesses/Qazi), you may keep that document as proof of divorce. For stronger legal recognition, many people also record or declare the divorce before a Family Court or obtain a formal declaration, which helps in official records and future legal matters. It is advisable to consult a lawyer and complete proper documentation so that the Khula divorce and related rights are legally protected.
