Blackmailing and Defamation by inlaws.

I am a person in public service. We separated within 8 months after marriage. And i filed for a divorce and proceedings are going on. Subsequently, they have filed for 498a case(chargesheet filed)In an attempt to extract money from me, they are doing all sorts of unethical things. They are going on canvassing lies about me to all the people who know me. They are threatening me that they would do dharnas and do press meetsAre these legal acts? Can i do something legally to restrict them?

the acts they are doing are not legal. the particulars regarding you case are submitted before the court. as if they do any kind of thing which will cause damage to your job profile your status you can file compliant in police station under section 499 , 504 . As well as file. case before the court under 499 and aslo. ask. for compensation

In such circumstances you too should file appropriate cases against them so that they too are accused before the court. As for defamation you may send legal notice followed by filing a defamation case before the magistrate
