Wife filed false dowry case wants to file a case for defamation

Hi, My wife had filed false dowry harassment, domestic violence and maintenance cases against me. My parents are also involved in the dowry harassment case. Post filing these cases, my father in law sent a written letter to my father's hospital's (he is a doctor) and a copy of that letter was sent to news paper, CM office and Health Minister's office. In the letter he accused him and me. Now, we want to file a defamation case against him (given that we have the letter). What can we do here?
You can file defamation case, but you have to prove that the accusations made on behalf of your wife is false.
My first preference is to protect marriage rather than to break it , because it is very easy to take divorce rather than to protect marriage life.
