Which city can I file case for defamation

There was a defamatory poster put up in an institution in Mumbai about me. It contained things that ruin my reputation. Through whatsapp and other social media, it has reached people around me in Chennai and it is affecting my social life. I wish to initiate proceedings against the removal and of this poster and see compensation. Can I file a lawsuit in Chennai or must I go to Mumbai where the actual poster is?

Complaint against Defamation can be filed before police or before the magistrate court directly. if there are multiple locations involved the cause of action will be in continuous and you can file complaint either in Mumbai or in Chennai, both will have the jurisdiction to file the complaint. feel free to contact me for any legal advice.

Hi Sir/Mam in your scenario, even though the institution is is Mumbai, the institution has circulated defamatory content against you in Chennai and other states including Mumbai, so you are having rights to file the suit for defamation claiming compensation against the post in any place wherever the defamatory post has been circulated by the institution including chennai, mumbai or any other places.
