If the daughter is a major, leaving home voluntarily is not an offence. However, taking ₹50,000 without consent may amount to theft under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (earlier IPC Section 378). The mother may: Lodge a complaint before the local police station. Issue a legal notice demanding return of money. If she is a senior citizen and neglected, she can seek maintenance under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act before the RDO/Tribunal. However, if this is a family dispute, mediation may also be considered before initiating criminal action.

Theft, defined under Section 378 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and updated in Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, involves dishonestly taking movable property out of a person's possession without consent. Key elements include dishonest intention, moving the property, and lack of consent. Punishments may include up to three years imprisonment, a fine, or both.
