I am a doctor having private practice. Few days ago police came to me asking for a death certificate what I have given the patient party few months ago. Police said someone had lodged a case that the patient have been murdered and the original paper I have given to the party was missing. Police asked me wheather I issued the certificate. I declared, the patient was under my treatment and I issued the certificate. I think there is some issues regarding property. The case is in court.what can I do

you do what you think is right. legally I don't see any issue if you have genuinely treated the deceased during the life term and you have issued the death certificate in accordance with law. in fact your certificate is not a statutory certificate and only an opinion of expert based on which the cause of death can be ascertained as also the statutory body would issue death certificate. in any event you might be summoned as witness in the ensuing criminal case whose investigation is going on. one last piece of advice DO NOT CONCEAL anything and cooperate with the investigation in case you have not done anything wrong. in any other event seek legal advice in person. regards, Tanmoy Chattopadhyay, M.Sc (Net qualified), LL.B (University of Delhi), Advocate, High Court, Calcutta.
