A live-in relationship is not legally binding like marriage, so you are free to leave anytime. However, the law (under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005) gives certain protections if you have been: Mentally or physically abused, Financially dependent on your partner, or Living together for a long time like a married couple. If there is no abuse or joint property, you can simply move out. 2. Practical Steps to Leave Safely 1. Inform your partner clearly - Tell them calmly that you are ending the relationship. 2. Avoid arguments or threats - Do not meet alone if you expe er or violence; have a friend or relative nearby.

In your situation, the foremost step is to handle the matter calmly and lawfully without confrontation. Since you were in a live-in relationship for only about a month and both parties were consenting adults, there is no element of criminality unless coercion, false promises of marriage, or exploitation can be proven. Under Indian law, a live-in relationship is recognized as a relationship “in the nature of marriage” only when it has continuity, social acceptance, shared household, and duration short-term or casual relationships do not fall under this category. Hence, any threat to file a false complaint of rape on a promise of marriage, domestic violence, or harassment can be legally countered. You should immediately preserve all communications such as messages, chats, call records, and photographs proving that the relationship was consensual and brief. Avoid any further personal meetings or emotional arguments; communicate only in writing, politely stating that the relationship was consensual and that you are ending it due to family reasons, without disrespect or abuse. If she repeats her threats, you may send a preventive complaint to the local police station and the Women’s Cell stating that you apprehend a false complaint from her, enclosing evidence of her threats.

Well, if you leave her, she may file a Rape Case against you whether you have promised her or not of getting married to her. So now, I have to form a strategy with you to defend yourself from the charge of Rape and have to prove that while living in Live In, you have not made any promise of marriage ever and both of you were engaging in consensual sex.

Well, rather than coming under her pressure, you go and lodge a Police Complaint against her, but first make sure before doing that, you all have evidences, that, you have consensually engaged with her!
