Can Police file complaint against us if mother in law did fraud

Dear sir My mother in law lose some amount in chit fund n she s not in the same place. But are staying in same area please let me know did any one raise a complaint on my mother in law name did police can file a FIR under my name or my husband name.Then don't have any proof of mine and we doesn't knew it. Now this ladies are creating a sTory that we knew it before while they gave money v was there and we need to return ... Butt we are unaware of it. What's the solution for this
