Are there any Legal consequence resulting form break of engagement ?

Dear Sir, I was engaged on 10.10.16, however differences pop up later on & my family decided to not go ahead with the marriage. we conveyed our decision to the girls father. since, then we tried to settle it on social however, failed due to unreasonable demand from girls side. they are threatening since early that they will go to courts, if we failed to meet their demand. I have informed this fact to the SP and DM, in writing. now, please advice me whether I should fulfill their demands and settle the matter at social level. If so happens, whether the girl side can still implicate us. or please suggest what i should do to settle the issue in one go with no further complication.
