Sister is passing defamatory statements can I take legal action

My sister is saying various defamatory statements against me to my husband and can I file defamation case against my sister.
in case any type of character assassination of defamatory statement in public or published for public it may dealt with in two ways one under section 500 of Indian penal code and secondly by a civil suit. in both the matters as a first step notice is to be served with.
