School refusing to return the original birth certificate of my son

26-Feb-2023 (In Civil Law)
My sons are studying in a private school affiliated with CBSE. Recently for some personal reason, I wanted to shift them to another CBSE school near my house. However, I am surprised to find that the previous school is refusing to return the original birth certificates. nI want to know whether a school can demand to keep such an important legal document in their custody.

Schools are not entitled to keep your original birth certificate, as the document should legally remain with the child's parents or legal guardian. While schools may ask for a copy for verification, they should not hold the original indefinitely. If a school refuses to return the document, you can formally request its return, ask for a certified true copy stamped by the school, or obtain a duplicate birth certificate from the local births and deaths registration authority.

sir birth certificate is a public document you can apply and get any number of certificate from the concerned birth and death registrar office. it hardly costs you about less then 100 Rupees, instead of wasting your time in school you can easily get the birth certificate from the concerned office.

Thank you sir for the reply. My problem is that my elder son (Now 12 years old) was born in Assam and the younger one (now 8 years old) was born in Sikkim.
