Need Help Regarding Parent’s Name Mismatch in Documents for Visa

19-Sep-2025 (In Civil Law)
My parents' names are without surnames in all their documents (Satish Prasad & Sunita), but in my education documents and passport, their names appear as Satish Prasad Joshi & Sunita Joshi. My Aadhaar and PAN have their names without surnames. For my student visa, I was advised to match all docs for consistency and to add their surname in my Aadhar/PAN. How can I update Aadhaar or PAN if their documents don’t have surnames? Is this the right thing to do? Please guide me on the correct approach.

You cannot unilaterally add surnames in Aadhaar or PAN if the parent’s supporting documents (like their ID proofs) do not show surnames. For visa purposes, it is better to maintain uniformity in your own records instead of altering theirs. The practical approach is either: (i) apply for a Gazette name correction/change for your parents so that official documents reflect the surname, or (ii) execute an affidavit explaining that both versions (with and without surname) belong to the same persons, and use this affidavit along with their existing IDs for your visa. The second option is faster and commonly accepted by universities/embassies. Updating Aadhaar/PAN without supporting documents will not be accepted, so affidavit route is the correct and practical solution.

Hi there, at first you shall try to contact the consulate of the country you are applying for a visa and explain the situation and suggest to provide a signed affidavit from each of your parents explaining the discrepancy. If they don't allow it, you can approach UIDAI, however it's unlikely they'll help. If none of these work then your only option will be to approach court and get an order allowing you to make changes. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

It is not advisable to unilaterally add surnames to your parents’ names in Aadhaar or PAN if their own official documents do not have surnames, as UIDAI and PAN authorities require documentary proof with the updated names for such changes. Instead, for student visa or document consistency, the correct and practical approach is to execute an affidavit explaining that both versions of your parents’ names (with and without surnames) refer to the same persons. This affidavit, along with supporting IDs, can usually be submitted to embassies or universities, and is often accepted for visa purposes where minor documentary discrepancies exist. If complete uniformity is required by foreign or academic authorities, then you may consider a Gazette name correction for your parents, so that their official documents can be updated with the surnames, but this is a lengthy process and may not be necessary if the affidavit suffices. Attempting to update Aadhaar or PAN without matching name proof is likely to result in rejection, so using an affidavit (explaining the discrepancy) is the most appropriate legal and time-efficient method given your situation.
