Issued a wrong certificate due to lack of awareness.

15-Sep-2025 (In Civil Law)
My mother applied for an OBC certificate in delhi through tehsildar when I was in 9th class, but now when I am in class 12 , I got to know that I belong to the 'Dhanuk' caste which is a scheduled caste in delhi(as confirmed from the official document by the central government). I want to change this certificate, I have never used reservation benefits till date in any exams or admissions.

Submit an application for cancellation of OBC certificate explaining that it was issued under a mistaken category, supported with SC notification proof. OR File a new application with the SDM/Tehsildar for issuance of an SC certificate.

You can apply to the SDM/Tehsildar for correction by submitting proof that you belong to the Dhanuk caste (recognized as SC in Delhi) along with family caste documents and an affidavit. The earlier OBC certificate can be surrendered, and a fresh SC certificate will be issued after verification. If the authority delays or refuses, you may approach the Caste Scrutiny Committee or file a writ before the High Court.

If the official documents and government list confirm that you belong to the 'Dhanuk' caste, which is recognized as a Scheduled Caste (SC) in Delhi rather than an Other Backward Class (OBC), you have every right to apply for correction of your caste certificate. Since you have not availed any reservation benefits under the OBC category in any educational exams or admissions so far, there is no violation or misuse involved. To rectify this, you should formally apply for cancellation or correction of the earlier OBC certificate and request the issuance of a fresh Scheduled Caste certificate. This application can be made to the concerned Tehsildar or District Magistrate office, along with supporting documents such as the official SC list, proof of caste, previously issued certificates, and an affidavit clarifying that no benefits have been claimed based on the incorrect certificate. It is advisable to clearly explain the mistake and provide as much supporting evidence as possible to ensure a smooth process. Once the correct SC certificate is issued, you will be eligible to claim reservation benefits as per law in future educational opportunities or government schemes. For assistance in preparing the necessary documents or with the application process, personalized legal support can be provided if required.
