if the defendant has been served with the summons and he has received the summons and still he does not appear in court then you as plaintiff can argue that the matter be proceeded ex-parte. and in the meanwhile if the defendant lawyer file his vp then he has to remain present.

It is not possible that after treating Defendant as Exparte, Courts will go for Evidence Call of Plaintiff. Evidence Call of Plaintiff means that Plaintiff is being called up by the Court to produce Evidence before the court in a case.

Whereas if the Defendant neither appears nor his Advocate appears for more than three times consecutively in a proceeding, then the Court has the power to pass an Exparte Order by declaring the Judgement in favor of the Plaintiff. This law applies vice-versa too.
