Can a university compel a student to deposit money for uniform

23-Jul-2023 (In Civil Law)
Our college management is compelling us to pay fee for uniform. When we joined the college they told us that there will not be uniform or any dress code in this college. And now they are forcing us to wear uniform otherwise they are saying that we will be thrown out of the class. Only 6-7 months are left for our studies. So buying uniform for a shorter period is a waste of money and also a burden for our family. Can we have any options to take action against this?

Hi,

In this case, the college authorities cannot ask or compel you to pay the fees for uniform as it is unconstitutional and illegal. However you need to file a case in the High Court against college and university authorities to make your rights ensured. They can insist uniform dress to the students only after making rules to that effect.

The best option is to convince the management regarding the difficulties that you face when a uniform is brought all of sudden. Moving against college for such things will not provide any remedy soon.

It may be that the College management can insist on uniforms, they cannot insist that the uniforms should be purchased from them or through them.
