Accused hurt other party in heat of a moment had no intention

There is a friend who is accused of attempt to murder under section 307. Bt it was not planned and the accuser himself came to the accused with his friends and a gun. For self defense the accused beat the accuser by hands and not with any equipment or weapon and the accuser is alive and well. Emphasizing on the fact that the incident was unplanned by the accused, I want to know that whether the accused is guilty or not?
