Your chances of recovering your money are quite high because under Indian law, WhatsApp chats, emails, and UPI payment IDs are considered valid electronic evidence to prove a contract and outstanding debt. Since the default is a year old, you are well within the 3-year legal limitation period to take action. The first and most effective step is to send a formal Legal Notice for recovery of money to his email ID and WhatsApp. A legal notice from an advocate carries significant weight and usually pressures the defaulting party to clear the dues immediately to avoid a formal lawsuit or criminal complaint for cheating. I can help you draft and send this notice officially.
