Lent money to a friend who made false promises of return

My relative lend a huge amount of money to a friend who made false promises of multiplying the money to a even bigger amount. Now he is not returning the principal amount as well. There are no paperworks involved and he took the money in different bank accounts. We only have a few phone call recordings as proof. There are some witnesses as well. Can we recover the money through legal course?
