How to add a name in registry of property

Case: Me and my friend bought plot (1200 Sqft) around 25 year back. I had made payment of plot cost by cheque to him. But due some problem, He didn't mentioned my name in registry. today we want add our name in registry by paying stamp duty take position on (600 sqft) . My question is that How to proceed and legal action required from our end to avoid any future problem
