‘Batla House’ gets green signal for release on Independence Day by Delhi HC

August 14, 2019

The John Abraham starrer movie & lsquo Batla House' has received Delhi High Court's approval to release on the Independence Day. The order has been given by the Court in a petition filed by a Batla House encounter case accused named Ariz Khan who sought postponement of the screening of the movie on the grounds that it would adversely affect his trial. The Court has given its green signal to the movie after the filmmakers and the accused in the encounter case reached consensus on certain changes in the movie. The HC, while disposing of the said petition, has stated that the filmmakers are bound by their statement made in the Court. Another accused named Shahzad Ahmed, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Batla House case and has challenged the same in the High Court, had also sought postponement of the film release. Both Ariz and Shahzad are also facing charges in the 2008 Delhi serial bomb blasts case. The producers of the movie had claimed that the apprehension of the two accused is not supported or proven by any evidence that they have been figured as characters in the movie, however, they agreed to delete some scenes which were objected by the two accused along with putting a disclaimer in the movie. The disclaimer would be shown at the beginning of the movie and would state that it has been inspired by Delhi Police and the events shown in the movie are either reported or otherwise available in public domain. The scenes to be deleted shows confession of one of the accused and preparation of a bomb. In addition to this, the Court also asked to delete an actual mage of an officer of Delhi Police which is shown at the end of the movie to make good of the disclaimer made at the outset. The Court has also stated that an edited copy with these changes is not required to be submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) by the filmmakers. The movie is inspired by the Batla House encounter case that took place on September 19, 2008, when the Delhi Police Special Cell raided a flat in Batla House in south Delhi's Jamia Nagar. The raid was conducted on a tip-off that the terrorists who were involved in September 13, 2008, Delhi serial blasts were hiding in the flat.
