What constitutes cyber- crime


The advancement of technology has made all of society way too dependent on the internet. All our personal and private data, pictures, bank details and likewise are available on the internet, in some form or the other through social networking sites, online shopping, money transfers etc. Thus, it is important for you to know the possible drawbacks of the same.

Cyber crime includes:

Any unlawful criminal activity that is done:
 
  • On the internet and
  • By means of the internet.
 
Cybercrime includes all such crimes that are computer related and facilitated crimes, namely:
 
  • internet stalking,
  • cyber hacking,
  • credit and debit card frauds,
  • bank robbery,
  • phishing(fraudulent mails)
  •  illegal downloading, ,
  • child pornography,
  • kidnapping children via chat rooms,
  • creation and distribution of viruses and spam.
 
What to do if you are a victim of cyber crime?

If you have been subjected to any kind of cyber crime, you must immediately file a complaint in the cyber crime cell in your city, the details of which are available on the internet.

The complaint should be made to the official in-charge at the cyber crime cell by:
 
  • sending a letter, or
  • making an online complaint via e-mail, or
  • making a phone call or sending an SMS on the official’s number, or
  • meeting him personally.
 
   5 preventive measures that you should take while using the Internet:
 
  • Avoid disclosing any personal information to strangers through e-mail or while chatting.
  • Avoid sending any photograph to strangers online.
  • Update your anti-virus software to guard against virus attacks and keep back up volumes so that you may not suffer data loss in case of virus contamination.
  • Never send your credit card number to any site that is not secured, to guard against frauds.
  • Parents should keep a close watch on the sites that their children are accessing to prevent any kind of harassment of children.
