A lot of things such as numerology, astrology, and marriage may lead to a person changing their name. Different states in India have different procedures of changing one's name legally. Unlike Maharashtra, where the process of changing the name is online, the process in Bangalore is entirely manual. The process of name change includes the filing of an affidavit for changing the name, an advertisement or notification in the newspaper, and a publication in the State and National Gazette.

Step-by-Step Procedure of Legally changing Name in Bangalore

A person must follow the steps below to legally change their name in Bangalore:

Step 1: Draft and file a Name Change Affidavit The affidavit for changing one's name is a document that affirms or swears and confirms the identity of the person who intends to change their name. The & lsquo identity' here implies both the former name of the applicant and the name to which the applicant intends to transition. An Advocate SEM, a Judicial or Executive Magistrate, a Notary Public, or an Oaths Commissioner is eligible to attest to this Affidavit. If a person wishes to change their name in Bangalore, the draft Affidavit must be printed on a stamp paper of the suitable value, which is Rs. 20 in Karnataka. If the Affidavit is insufficiently stamped, i.e., it is printed on a stamp paper of a lesser denomination, it will not be accepted. The person who intends to change their name must provide their previous name, new name, and their current residential address in the name change Affidavit. The reason behind changing the name and the age of the applicant must also be mentioned.

Step 2: Posting the Name Change Advertisement in Newspapers Posting an advertisement or notification in the newspaper is equally crucial in the process of changing one's name. This step ensures that the change in the name of the applicant is declared publicly in the public domain. The advertisement must be made both in a regional language newspaper of Bangalore and an English Daily. A newspaper requires the following details to post a name change advertisement:

  1. Applicant's old name,

  2. Applicant's new name,

  3. Parent's or husband's name of the Applicant (if the change in the name is after marriage),

  4. Address of the Applicant,

  5. Date of the Affidavit, and

  6. Name of the person who attested the name change Affidavit.

Step 3: Publication of Notification in the Gazette Notification must be published in both State and National Gazette. A government-employed person is required to submit the relevant documents to the Government Central Press, Bangalore, and they can have their name changed. A resident of Bangalore willing to have their name changed does not have the option to do so online through a digitized process. The documents required for publication in the Gazette are as follows:

  1. An ID Proof: Aadhar Card, Passport, Voter ID Card, or PAN Card with the old name,

  2. Address Proof: Ration Card, Electricity Bill, or Aadhar Card, and

  3. A recent passport-sized photograph.

In case a woman intends to change her name after marriage, a copy of the Marriage Certificate along with the abovementioned documents must also be submitted.
