Can my in laws change my name forcefully

06-Jun-2023 (In Family Law)
All these years, I was using my maternal name "Priyanka Nale" for all official and practical and personal purposes. However, my in-laws are forcing me to change me surname, even though I do not want to do so. They have made me forcibly do a gazette name change, by threatening end of marriage etc. However, even though that is done, I do not want to change my name anywhere on any of my personal or official documents. Please advise: 1) Are in-laws permitted to force me to change my last name. 2) If they are not, what action can be taken against them.

Your in laws obviously can not force you to change your name in all official records. If they are forcing you, pls talk to your husband first and inform him that you do not want to change name. If the husband is not co-operating, then try to take help of your parents and try to convince your in laws. If this does not work, then you may take help of women cell of nearest police station. You can also file a case of domestic violence against in laws. But, in getting help of police or court, there is always danger of brake up of relations irretrievably. So, before taking any decision, pls take advice of elders.
