Mother in law abusive. What action can i take against her?

07-Oct-2023 (In Divorce Law)
Married in 2011. Earlier i used to work, my mother in law used to take all my salary. I quit due to family planning and got twins. Mother in law kept pressuring me to work. Mother in law got physically abusive with me as i didn't work. They took all my jewelry and thereafter i left for my home. What can i do? What to do if i don't want to keep the custody.

You can file a case of 498 a under the Indian Penal Code against you mother in law, under which if your husband or any relative of your husband subjects you to cruelty shall be punished with three years of imprisonment and shall also be liable to fine. You also have the option of filing a domestic violence case under the Protection of women from Domestic Violence Act, against your mother in law.
Regarding the custody, to my understanding you are talking about the custody of your twins. Their custody can be negotiated hoping that you are looking for a divorce. In that case you can ask the court for only visitation rights and abandon the custody of your children while you file for maintenance.
