Interference of in-laws by coming and staying for long durations

21-Jan-2026 (In Divorce Law)
I am married for 31 years. My wife's parents regularly come and stay in our house for long durations. This is disrupting my peace of mind. Can I tell them not to stay for long durations. The house we stay is purchased by me and is on my name. Can my wife say that they can come and stay in our house as she is my wife and also has right over the house.

Since the house is purchased and owned by you, your in-laws have no independent legal right to stay in that property against your consent. Your wife has a right of residence in the shared household, but that right does not automatically extend to granting long-term stay to her parents as a matter of right. You are legally entitled to maintain peace and reasonable boundaries in your own home. You may politely inform them that short visits are welcome, but extended stays are not acceptable and must be with mutual consent. If the situation escalates, it can be addressed through family counseling/mediation, and in extreme cases through a civil injunction to prevent interference/unauthorised long stay. However, avoid harsh actions; try written communication and mediation first.
