Foreign divorce decree in India valid?

I and my ex-husband were married in India. We both moved to Germany after few years. We got divorced here with mutual consent. Now he is demanding a letter from Indian courts saying we are divorced there. Is the german mutual divorce decree valid in India or I need file an execution? What happens if I do not file an execution?
As per my discussions with other clients who took the same route, use the german divorce decree translated to english and got remarried in India without any trouble.
