Dear Madam,  Under Hindu Marriage Act, marriage between parties related within the prohibited degrees of relationship or sapinda relationship is not valid unless such custom permits it. Since your grandfathers are not brothers and there is no direct lineage or common ancestor within three generations on the father’s side or five generations on the mother’s side, you both are not sapindas to each other. Therefore, your marriage is legally permissible under Hindu law, provided both families belong to different gotras or the custom of your community does not prohibit such alliance. You can register your marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
