Will verification cause only -ve report at worst or lead to life prblm

22-Oct-2025 (In Criminal Law)
About 3 years ago, during a college relationship, an incident happened that still worries me. I was never contacted, summoned, or informed by police or court, and I don’t even know if any FIR was ever filed. I’m preparing for government exams but fear that an unknown or inactive FIR might exist. Should I continue my preparation confidently, or can such a case, if it exists, cause life problems beyond administrative issues?

If you were never contacted, questioned, or served any notice by the police or court in the past three years, it’s highly unlikely that any FIR or case is pending against you. You can confirm this by applying for a police verification or character certificate through your local police station or online state police portal. If no record appears, you’re in the clear. You can confidently continue your preparation for government exams. An inactive or unknown FIR, if ever filed without your knowledge, would still require due legal notice before affecting your career or background verification. There’s no cause for concern unless you receive official intimation.

what is the incident, what is its gravity and how you are related with incident, directly or indirectly matters. But from the facts disclosed by you, one thing is certain that there was a police action and involvement in the matter. And your worry is genuine. Contact a decent lawyer to help you out of this situation. And be free from past. Thanks

That said, if you still have doubt, you may file a simple RTI application before the local police station or district police office seeking clarification on whether any FIR has ever been registered in your name. This is a routine, lawful method used by many candidates before government examinations to avoid unnecessary anxiety.
