Sub collector enquiry report pending from 24-12-2025

21-Jan-2026 (In Criminal Law)
My wife passed away. I was arrested, granted bail, and all bail conditions were fully relaxed. Police stated the investigation was almost complete, yet no charge-sheet has been filed. A Sub-Collector enquiry concluded on 24-12-2025, but the final report is still pending. When can I expect the report—through court directions or RTI?

Once the investigation is completed, the police are legally bound to file the final report/charge sheet within a reasonable time. Mere statements that investigation is “almost complete” do not extend this obligation. Since the Sub-Collector enquiry concluded on 24-12-2025 and the final report is still pending, you have two effective remedies. First, you may approach the jurisdictional Magistrate/Court by filing a petition seeking a direction to the Investigating Officer to file the final report within a fixed time. Courts routinely issue such directions when there is unexplained delay, especially after bail conditions are relaxed. Second, filing an RTI may give limited information on the status, but sensitive investigation details are often exempt. Therefore, a court direction is the more effective and enforceable remedy.
