Based on the facts stated by you, the cheque bounce of ₹20,000 is a serious matter. A cheque bounce case is generally filed under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. After the cheque is dishonoured, the opposite party must issue a legal notice demanding payment within 15 days. Only if the payment is not made within that period can a criminal complaint be filed. Therefore, you may first try to speak calmly with the opposite party and request reasonable time to clear the outstanding amount. If possible, communicate in writing (such as through message or WhatsApp) and clearly mention the date by which you will repay the amount. However, if the money was taken on the promise of providing a job, it may also lead to allegations of cheating, which is a more serious offence. Hence, it is advisable to resolve the matter immediately. To avoid court proceedings, the safest course is to repay the amount as early as possible. If you have already received a legal notice, you should consult a lawyer and send a proper reply within the prescribed time. Do not delay, and attempt to settle the matter amicably and legally.
